 Barbara W. Ashley, RN, MSN, ANP, Adult Nurse Practitioner  

Barbara Ashley, RN, MSN, CRNP, is an Adult Nurse Practitioner with more than 20 years experience in the field of breast cancer, breast screening, and oncology nursing.  A graduate of Syracuse University with a bachelor's degree in nursing, Ms. Ashley earned her Master of Science degree in nursing from The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC.  She received her nurse practitioner training at The Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. She came to Mercy from The Johns Hopkins Breast Center and the Breast Oncology Group.

Cardiology- The Heart Center at Overlea

   After graduating from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Dr. Kahn completed his Internship and Residency at The Union Memorial Hospital and a Fellowship in Cardiology at the University of Maryland.  He previously served as the Medical Director of Open Heart Surgery and the Coronary Care Unit at Union Memorial Hospital.  Dr. Kahn has been in private practice for twenty years.

   In private practice since 1989, Dr. Zawodny attended the University of Maryland School of Medicine.  He completed his Residency and Fellowship at the University of Maryland and is board certified in Cardiology.  He is a general and interventional cardiologist who performs cardiac catheterization and angioplasty with stenting.

Counseling

  Nicholas P. Conti, LCSW-C returns to Overlea where he was born and raised.  He received his bachelor’s degree from Loyola College in Baltimore and was commissioned as an officer in the United States Army.  Following his discharge from the U.S. Army in 1969, he received a Master’s Degree in Clinical Social Work from the University of Maryland School of Social Work.  He has been practicing in the Baltimore area since 1972.  Mr. Conti has served as a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Maryland School of Social Work and as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Mr. Conti is a Diplomate of the American Psychotherapy Association, a member of the American Academy of Certified Social Workers and is licensed to practice counseling and psychotherapy.  He provides individual, family and marital counseling to a wide range of people from age seventeen through those who are geriatric.  His approach is to assist patients in dealing with the day-to-day pressures of their lives.  Mr. Conti helps people in coping with major life changes, depression, anger management and the development of effective communication skills

Dermatology

   A graduate of the University of Maryland Medical School, Dr. Lauring completed her internship and residency at the University of Maryland. She served Chief Resident in Dermatology and is board eligible in
Dermatology. Her areas of expertise include General and Cosmetic Dermatology and she treats all ages, children and adults. Minor surgery is performed in her office.

Endocrinology

   Dr. Rushovich trained in South Africa and did his residency at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Chicago and his fellowship training at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. He was awarded a two year NIH research award during his fellowship training.

Dr. Rushovich is a Board Certified physician with specialties in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology (2001). He practiced in Michigan prior to coming to Baltimore. Dr. Rushovich directed a regional diabetes program and was Medical Director for a Diabetes Outreach Network covering 28 counties in Northern Michigan.

He was responsible for doing research, collecting data and designing strategies to coordinate and optimize services on a regional basis. While in Michigan, Dr. Rushovich held a faculty appointment at Michigan State University and was a member of the state diabetes advisory panel.

 Catherine Jonnakuty Dr. Jonnakuty received her undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland, College Park and her medical degree from Kasturba Medical College.  She completed her Internal Medicine internship and residency at the NYU School of Medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital in Yew York City.   Dr. Jonnakuty completed her fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Penn State University.

Family Practice

Rebecca A. Cerrato, M.D., joined The Institute for Foot and Ankle Reconstruction at Mercy as an attending surgeon following the completion of her fellowship under the instruction of the Institute's medical director, Dr. Mark Myerson.

Dr. Cerrato received her medical degree from the University of Chicago - Pritzker School of Medicine. She completed an internship and residency at the University of Chicago Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation as well as a residency at Georgetown University Department of Orthopaedics.

Board Certified, Dr. Cerrato offers expertise in foot and ankle surgery, including arthroscopic surgery. She has orthopedic-focused research experience and also was a regular speaker during Grand Rounds for the Georgetown University Department of Orthopaedics.



Gastroenterology

   David B. Posner, M.D., Chief of Gastroenterology at Mercy, is a graduate of the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Dr. Posner is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine with a subspecialty in Gastroenterology. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, American Gastroenterological Society, and American College of Gastroenterology as well as American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, and Baltimore City Medical Society. Dr. Posner is past president of the Maryland Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

For the past 20 years, Dr. Posner has taught students and residents from the University of Maryland. As Attending Physician at Mercy Medical Center, Dr. Posner teaches residents in medicine and surgery and received the Outstanding Physician-Teacher Award in 1982. He has authored numerous abstracts and publications.

   Scott Huber, M.D., earned his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine through the University of Maryland Medical System and fellowship in Gastroenterology at Brown University and Rhode Island Hospital. Dr. Huber conducted research on the genetic changes seen in the progression of Barrett’s esophagus to esophageal cancer while at Brown University. Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, his interests include GERD, screening for GI cancers and ulcer disease.

Dr. Huber is a member of the board of directors of the Endoscopy Center of North Baltimore,  American Gastroenterological Association,  American College of Gastroenterology, and American Society for GI Endoscopy.

   Patrick Hyatt, M.D., earned his medical degree at the Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine and his fellowship in Gastroenterology at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Dr. Hyatt is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and American Board of Gastroenterology. He received advanced training in therapeutic endoscopy, including endoluminal stent placement and endoscopic mucosal resection of large, flat polyps. He has numerous clinical presentations and medical publications to his credit, addressing disorders of the GI tract as well as treatments such as chemoprevention of colon cancer. Dr. Hyatt is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association, American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and American College of Gastroenterology.

Anurag Maheshwari, M.D.

Anurag Maheshwari, M.D., completed his fellowship in Gastroenterology as well as an advanced fellowship in Transplant Hepatology at Johns Hopkins Hospital.  He also served as a junior faculty member in the division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Maheshwari received his medical degree from the University of Bombay, India, and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the St. Louis University Hospital, St. Louis, Missouri. Thereafter, he worked as a practicing internist for a few years before his pursuit of advanced training. 
                                                                                  
Dr. Maheshwari has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters and has many presentations to his credit including invited talks at various conferences and hospital grand rounds around the country. He is a member of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.

General Surgery

  Dr. Alexander received his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx , New York . He completed his residency in General Surgery at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, NY.

Dr. Alexander completed fellowships in Laparoscopy and Pediatric Trauma at the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health Care System and Schneider Children's Hospital of the Long Island Jewish Medical Center, respectively. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery. He is a candidate for fellowship in the American College of Surgeons.

 Dr. Alexander is a member of the American College of Surgeons and the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons.
 

   Dr. Swope, a General Surgeon at Mercy Medical Center , is the Medical Director of the Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery at Mercy. Dr. Swope is also Clinical Instructor, Department of General Surgery, at the University of Maryland . Dr. Swope is a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Swope received his medical degree from the St. Louis University School of Medicine in St. Louis , Missouri . He completed his post-graduate training in general surgery at the St. Louis University Health Sciences Center with an emphasis on laparoscopic surgery.

Dr. Swope has numerous publications/presentations in his field and is committed to clinical education. Gynecology

   As Chief of Endoscopy & Pelvic Reconstruction in the Center for Women’s Health & Medicine at Mercy, Dr. Barrueto treats abnormal uterine bleeding, infertility, chronic pelvic pain, and other reproductive system disorders. Diagnostic hysteroscopy is used to examine the uterus and cervical canal. It can also be used to see and locate polyps, cysts, fibroids and other pathology. Areas of special interest include endoscopic surgery, pelvic reconstruction, treatment of infertility, urinary incontinence, menopause, and minimally invasive surgery as an alternative for hysterectomy. Dr. Barrueto, is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology as well as Advanced Endoscopic Surgery.


  Dr. Audlin received his undergraduate degree from St. Mary’s College of Maryland and his medical degree from Ross University.  He completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Maryland and then joined the Gynecology Center in the Center for Women’s Health and Medicine at Mercy.   Dr. Audlin sees all gynecology patients and has a special interest in Endoscopic and Pelvic Surgery.

   After graduation from the University of Athens Medical School in Athens, Greece, Dr. Ledakis completed his residency at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a a fellowship in Medical Oncology and Hematology at the National Cancer Institute and the National Blood Institute (N.I.H.) . Internal Medicine

  After 30 years, Dr. Lowe recently retired from the full time practice of medicine.  He continues to be active at Overlea, serving as Co-Medical Director with Dr. Fernando Ferro.



   After graduating from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Dr. Ferro completed his residency at Mercy Medical Center and served there as Chief Resident. He is board certified in Internal Medicine.

   Dr. Kowalewski is a graduate of the University of Maryland Medical School. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Mercy Medical Center. He has been practicing medicine for over 20 years.


 

Dr. Ari Lieman, completed his undergraduate degree from Harvard University and earned his medical degree at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. He is board certified in Internal Medicine. Dr. Lieman has been in practice since 1989.


  A native of California, Dr. Peffall completed his residency in Internal Medicine at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore and served there as Chief Resident. He is board certified in Internal Medicine. Dr. Peffall’s areas of special interest include geriatrics and the treatment of pulmonary disorders.
 

   Dr. Zang, board certified in Internal Medicine, began practicing medicine in the Washington DC area before moving to Overlea Personal Physicians in October, 2004.  He attended medical school at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and completed his residency at Johns Hopkins/Sinai.  

  Born and raised in Baltimore, Dr. Doyle completed his undergraduate degree at Loyola College in Baltimore and his Medical Degree at the Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  He completed his Residency in Internal Medicine at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania and is Board Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.  Prior to joining the Overlea Personal Physicians, he was in private practice in Towson since 1996. 
 

   Dr. Jason Goodman completed his medical education and residency at the University of Maryland. He comes to Overlea after being in private practice for the last 8 years in Silver Spring area where he was named one of the Top Doctors in the Washington area by The Washingtonian Magazine.  Dr. Goodman is Board Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Nephrology
   A graduate of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Dr. Greenwell completed his residency at Mercy Medical Center. Neurology

Neurosurgery

  As one of the neurosurgeons of Central Maryland Neurosurgical Associates, LLC, Dr. Charles Park provides treatment for diseases of the central nervous system, brain lesions, aneurysms, traumatic head injuries, back and spinal cord injuries, as well as discs and peripheral nerve disorders such as carpal tunnel syndrome, tarsal tunnel syndrome, and ulnar nerve decompression.

Non-Surgical Spine Care

   Dr. Mara Vucich is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation specializing in treating painful spine, joint, muscle and nerve conditions successfully without surgery. She has a special interest in evaluation and treatment to improve function and quality of life as it relates to spinal disorders. Some of the conditions that she treats include: arthritis and degeneration of the spine, back and neck strains, disc herniations, whiplash, torticollis, radiculopathy, scoliosis, spinal stenosis, osteoporosis, compression fractures and myofascial pain of the neck and back.

Dr. Vucich completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Maryland College Park and graduated from the honors program with a BS in Biology and an emphasis in neurophysiology. She attended medical school from 1994 to 1998, at the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine. In 2002, she successfully completed her residency training at the Medical College of Ohio in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Ophthalmology

   Dr. Rowen earned her medical degree at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.  She has lectured internationally, teaching advanced techniques in cataract and laser surgery to physicians worldwide. She completed a one-year surgical internship at Johns Hopkins Hospital and was a research fellow for two years at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins.  In practice since 1998, Dr. Rowen has established a world-wide reputation by being the first in the Baltimore region (and one of the first nationally) to remove cataracts without the use of injection anesthesia. Using micro incisions and foldable lens technology, she is able to achieve "instant vision" cataract surgery, without needles, stitches or patches.

 

Dr. Rowen serves as an assistant clinical professor of ophthalmology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and is a clinical instructor for Johns Hopkins Hospital.    Wendy Hecht Bohner, M.D., Board Certified ophthalmologist, has extensive experience in cataract removal, premiere lenses (Crystalens, ReZoom and ReStor), diabetic screening, glaucoma screening and treatment, plaquinal therapy screening, and routine exams.

Dr. Bohner earned her medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. She completed her internship in Internal Medicine and her residency in Ophthalmology, both at Greater Baltimore Medical Center. Her career includes honors from Harvard Medical School, Allegheny-Singer Research Institute and the Thomas Jefferson University School of Medicine. Orthopedics

   A graduate of the University of Maryland Medical School, Dr. Whitten completed his residency in Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Maryland Hospital in 1977. Dr. Whitten is board certified by the American College of Orthopedic Surgeons and has more than 22 years experience in orthopedic medicine.

In addition to his work in orthopedic surgery, Dr. Whitten also specializes in sports medicine, including arthroscopic surgery and joint replacements.


   Kamala H. Littleton, M.D. received her medical degree from the Georgetown University School of Medicine in 1994 and completed her orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Maryland Medical System in 1999. She became a member of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons in 2001 and was inducted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons in 2003.

Dr. Littleton previously practiced at David Grant Medical Center at Travis Air Force Base in California where she spent three years as a staff orthopedic surgeon. She treated active duty men and women with work and sports injuries as well as retirees and their dependents with osteoporosis and arthritis. Her interests include sports medicine, joint replacement and fracture care.


Dr. Littleton grew up and trained in the Baltimore-Washington area, and upon her return to Baltimore, she and Mercy Medical Center recognized a need for an orthopedic focus on women. As an athlete all her life with multiple sports injuries and subsequent rehabilitation as well as a woman facing the future risks of osteoporosis and arthritis, she understands and relates to the specific needs of women.

Otolaryngology (ENT)

   Dr. Oshinsky completed his residency at the University of Maryland and is board certified. As an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist, his areas of special interest include treatment of snoring and sleep apnea, tinnitus, pediatric otolarynology, and nasal and sinus disease.


   Dr. Showalter graduated from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine in 1995 and completed her residency in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery in 2002. She completed her Fellowship in Head and Neck Surgical Oncology at the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI.

She is a fine clinician in the diagnosis and treatment of ear, nose and throat issues and is very skilled in the field of treating head and neck cancers.

Dr. Showalter also completed an internship in general surgery as well as a Fellowship in the treatment of deafness and other communication disorders at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD.

Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery

  Brendan J. Collins, M.D., joined Mercy after completing a combined Johns Hopkins-University of Maryland fellowship in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He specializes in aesthetic breast surgery (augmentation, mastopexy), body contouring (liposuction, body lift), abdominoplasty, eyelid surgery, and facial enhancement.

He received his medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, graduating with Alpha Omega Alpha honors. Dr. Collins completed his general surgery internship and residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and is board certified in general surgery.

Dr. Collins is the recipient of a number of medical fellowships and awards, including the George D. Zuidema Research Award, awarded from the Johns Hopkins Medical Institution for work that he completed during a two year NIH funded research fellowship in the Tumor Biology Laboratory. His current clinical research interests include outcome studies following breast reconstruction, and applications of biologic substitutes in breast and abdominal wall reconstruction. He has a variety of peer reviewed publications, book chapters, and international presentations to his credit.

In addition to performing cosmetic surgery, Dr. Collins teams with the breast surgeons of The Hoffberger Breast Center to offer patients leading-edge choices in breast reconstruction after cancer surgery. Pulmonary

  Audrey H. Liu, M.D., graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and received her medical degree from the McGill University Faculty of Medicine. She completed her internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Dr. Liu subsequently completed fellowships in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine as well as Sleep Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine and Sleep Medicine, Dr. Liu has extensive clinical and research experience.

In addition to publishing papers, she has presented her research on a national level and is the recipient of a National Institutes of Health Ruth Kirchstein National Research Scientist Award. Radiation Oncology

  Maria C. Jacobs, M.D., is Director of Radiation Oncology at Mercy and oversees all radiotherapy services at Mercy Medical Center. Board Certified by the American Board of Radiology, Dr. Jacobs earned her medical degree from the Universidad Central de Venezuela in Caracas, Venezuela. She trained at Howard University in Washington, D.C., and the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque before joining the University of Maryland in Baltimore as an Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology.
While at the University of Maryland, she contributed to the development of the Breast Evaluation Program and was an investigator in the areas of combined-modality treatment for breast, gynecologic, and head and neck tumors. Dr. Jacobs was also the residency program director for three years and was active in teaching and mentoring students pursuing careers in radiation oncology.

Prior to joining Mercy, Dr. Jacobs was a faculty member of Johns Hopkins Radiation Oncology at Green Spring.

She is a member of the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) as well as the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Rheumatology

   Dr. Lorenzo began seeing patients at Overlea in August, 2005.  Board Certified in Internal Medicine, she recently completed a Fellowship in Rheumatology as well as Internship and Residency at the Cabrini Medical Center in New York City.   She is a graduate of the University of Puerto Rico and the Central del Carib Medical School in Puerto Rico.  She is a member of the American College of Rheumatology and the American Medical Association.

Surgical Oncology

   Is the director of Gastrointestinal Oncology at The Institute for Cancer Care at Mercy. He completed comprehensive training in Surgical Oncology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, the birthplace of modern oncology practice and research in the United States.

His primary clinical and research interests are the malignancies of the gastrointestinal tract. The American College of Surgeons awarded him with an international fellowship and he traveled to Tokyo, Japan to study the advanced treatment of gastric cancer. Dr. Gushchin provides expertise with advanced surgical techniques such as isolated limb infusion (ILI) for melanoma treatment and offers individualized oncology patient care and a focus on oncology research.

Dr. Gushchin is also directing a surgical oncology fellowship program, bringing the latest developments in oncology to the community surgeons.

Spine Surgery

   Clayton L. Dean, M.D., received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was awarded membership to the Alpha Omega Alpha and Hobart Amory Hare Medical Honor Society.

Dr. Dean completed his General Surgery internship and Orthopedic Surgery residency at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. He then completed a fellowship in Orthopedic Spine Surgery at The Emory Orthopaedic and Spine Center at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia, where he received advanced training in the management of adult and pediatric spinal disorders.

Dr. Dean brings a commitment to excellence in patient care and an unparalleled focus on clinical advancements. Prior to joining Mercy, Dr. Dean served as Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Emory University School of Medicine. Dr. Dean brings special expertise in the areas of minimally invasive spine surgery, surgery of the cervical spine, and motion preservation techniques including artificial disk replacement. In addition, he has received extensive training in the treatment of degenerative conditions, spinal deformity, and spine tumors using the most modern technology.

Dr. Dean has authored 10 peer-reviewed scientific articles with another 10 manuscripts submitted or in preparation. He has been the invited presenter of more than 25 scientific presentations at national and international meetings. He is the recipient of the Cervical Spine Research Society J. William Fielding Award and the Scoliosis Research Society Louis A. Goldstein Award

Urology

   Dr. Silber, a board certified Urologist, has been practice for nearly 30 years and has been Chief of Urology at Mercy Medical Center since 1984. A graduate of Chicago Medical School , Dr. Silber completed his internship and residency at the University of Maryland .

   After completing Medical School, internship and residency at the University of Maryland, Dr. Hantman completed his Fellowship at Johns Hopkins. He is board certified in Urology and has been in practice for 25 years.

   A board certified graduate of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Dr. Thompson is a Urologist who specializes in the treatment of prostate disease, incontinence, urological oncology, stone diseases, impotence, infertility, and pediatric urology.
